TO:  All Hanover Country Club Members

Dartmouth Provost Joseph Helble made several announcements pertaining to College operations over the summer, including that summer term, or “sophomore summer,” will be a fully remote-learning experience, and that the athletic camps and on-campus residential programs have been canceled.  He also announced that the Hanover Country Club (HCC) will be closed for the season.

I am sure that this decision is as difficult to read as it is for me to convey.  Like you, I had hoped that golf at the HCC would help us return a sense of normalcy to our lives.

The HCC will fully reimburse all who have purchased a 2020 membership.  This process will begin on Monday, April 27, and you should expect refunds shortly thereafter.  Please be in touch with Alex Kirk at  alex.kirk@dartmouth.edu or Dustin Ribolini at Dustin.M.Ribolini@dartmouth.edu if you have any questions about this process.

I am sorry to be the bearer of bad news. This is not the springtime message I had hoped to deliver.  Please see the attached FAQ for further information about the closure.

Sincerely,
Harry Sheehy
Director of Athletics & Recreation
Dartmouth College

Hanover Country Club Closed for the 2020 Season—FAQ’s

Why is the HCC closing for the season?

  • In his announcement about summer operations at Dartmouth, Provost Joe Helble said that “after several weeks of careful consideration, [Dartmouth has] concluded that the facts are not in our favor.” https://news.dartmouth.edu/covid-19/community-messages/april-20-2020
  • The ongoing progression of COVID-19, a wide geographic disparity in its containment, the continuing lack of adequate testing capability, and the absence of widespread effective treatment all contributed to Dartmouth’s decisions to virtualize classroom instruction and cancel programs and facilities. Simply put, the safety of the campus and Upper Valley communities is paramount.

Who made the decision?

  • Dartmouth senior leadership, in concert with the College’s COVID-19 task force with input from public health experts, is making all decisions related to institutional operations during the pandemic.

Will the HCC open next year?

  • This current decision was made on the basis of public health concerns related to the COVID-19 pandemic. We will assess the future as more information becomes available.

I purchased a 2020 membership already; can I get reimbursed?

  • The HCC will fully reimburse all who have purchased a 2020 membership. This process will begin on Monday, April 27, and you should expect refund shortly thereafter.

Will the course be maintained?

  • Yes, the course and the practice holes will be maintained.

Will the driving range, putting greens, practice holes or any other areas of the course be open to the public?

  • No areas of the golf course will be open for play or practice while the course is closed.

Can the public walk on the golf course trails and greens?

  • As is always the case, the public may access Pine Park through HCC trails.  Joggers and pedestrians (with pets) may use the paths along the greens.

If the golf course is closed for the season, how should we access Pine Park?

  • Pedestrians who wish to walk in Pine Park can access it at end of Rope Ferry Road, the path off Occom Ridge Road, or via the path entry off Route 10.

Will the course be patrolled by the police or Safety and Security?

  • The Office of Safety and Security will include the Hanover Country Club in their routine patrols. Violators will be cited for trespassing.
